“With Spring just around the corner, it’s finally time to wake our tresses from their winter hibernation and rejuvenate them with some fresh color. The change of the season doesn’t have to mean a drastic hair overhaul; not all of us are seeking a Kim-Kardashian-style dark brown to bleach blonde transformation. Nonetheless, there’s no better time than the turn of the season to make a change. When it comes to color, celebrity hairstylist George Papanikolas is certainly an authority. A favorite amongst the brightest stars of the Young Hollywood sect, George is known for his mastery of the French freehand coloring technique, “balayage”, which has become a staple amongst the industry elite. With a client list boasting names like Miranda Kerr, Mila Kunis, Britney Spears, Nicole Richie and Sofia Vergara, it’s safe to say that George knows a thing or two about helping his clients establish a signature look that garners the envy of the masses. Take a look below for George’s Spring hair color trend predictions for gals of all hues and tips for achieving the looks, for yourself!
Brunettes: Ecaille-Tortoiseshell. What Ombre was to 2013, Ecaille will be the trend for 2015. We’ve seen the fashionable crowd shift away from dramatic contrast from roots to ends, and towards more natural effects. The best result comes from taking your natural color and adding caramel, amber and golden highlights. It’s a much softer effect than ombre, and creates a more blended multi-dimension throughout the hair. The color can skew warm or cool, depending on your skin tone. Ideally you should keep more depth at the roots so you can extend time between appointments, keeping it on the lower maintenance side. To get this look, I would use Matrix SOCOLOR UL-AA with 40 volume. To maintain the color, use a color safe and low pH Shampoo and Conditioner to extend the color of your hair, such as Matrix Biolage COLORLAST Shampoo ad Matrix Biolage COLORLAST Conditioner. For extra vibrance and shine, use Matrix Biolage COLORLAST Shine Shake. Celeb Inspiration: Kelly Rowland, Jessica Biel.
Blondes: On the other end of the spectrum is the re-emergence of the Platinum Blonde, with Rita Ora, Kim Kardashian and Miley Cirus leading the way toward Scandinavian Territory. The twist is it’s on really dark brunettes with fake, bleached blonde hair and black eyebrows. It’s an edgy look and can be classified as the most glamorous look of the moment. With this trend you should proceed with caution as your hair will get damaged no matter what. It is not a color you’ll be able to keep forever as you’ll eventually grow tired of the maintenance and it can be harsh on the hair. You will need regular pastel toners such as Matrix Color Sync Pastel Toner to keep the brassiness at bay and Moisture masks like Matrix Biolage HYDRASOURCE Mask are a must to maintain the integrity of the hair.
Red Heads: We’ve seen them move towards softer pastel tones. Inspirations come from Jessica Chastain and Amy Adams. Coloring your hair red is easy just as long as you don’t want to color it lighter than your natural hair color, or are starting with natural hair color. Otherwise you will need to strip some of the darker pigment first. I recommend using Matrix SOCOLOR to get this look. To maintain the soft shades, use gentle products that won’t strip the color and moisture like Matrix Biolage Cleansing Conditioners. They cleanse without stripping, and condition without weight.
